Day 4 of 16 Cape Town to Victoria Falls 2018
Today’s adventures include our first real African Safari
Waking up to our glorious sea view, there’s a buzz around the breakfast table as everyone recounts their previous days first bit of off roading! We can hardly wait to get back on what is now quickly becoming our new BMW best friend, for a full day of mostly well prepared gravel roads.
Today’s adventures include our first real African Safari, where we will get up close and personal with South Africa’s wildest creatures. But not before we get a chance to see how the local folk get across the Breede River and have a good old chuckle over some of the weird wonders of Ronnie’s sex shop!
Crossing the Breede River on the cable pulled ferry
Off we go, whizzing over our first 20km of asphalt, soon followed by the well prepared gravel roads, through the vast landscapes of agricultural farmlands. The Breede river crossing greets our arrival with two men demonstrating sheer primal strength by pulling the ferry across using just rope and their bare hands! An old system, unchanged for hundreds of years. If you’re feeling particularly strong, you are welcome to wrap the rope around your chest and have a go yourself! The river men always welcome the extra help.
Reeks of the prehistoric era with it’s natural desert landscapes
Across the river we reach the area of Klein Karoo, which in Afrikaans means ‘little’ Karoo and reeks of the prehistoric era with it’s natural desert landscapes, magnificent mountain ranges and fossils that date back hundreds of millions of years. Joining the smooth tarmac roads for the renowned scenic Cape Route 62, we head eastwards for a light refreshment at the local ‘tourist’ bar, the infamous Ronnie’s Sex Shop. Any kind of obscured size or shaped bra you want – you can find one here!
Through the wilderness we ride from Arniston to Gondwana
The scenery is breath-taking as we sweep the gravelly roads through the rolling hills for our last 100km of the day. It’s not long before we begin to see road signs alerting us that we are now in Lion’s Country. So whatever you do, don’t stop! The last 4km of our journey is within the game park so watch out for any wild animals lurking amongst the bushes! Some local rangers are waiting to greet us and escort us through the park to our fantastic Private Safari Lodge, which is like nothing you’ve ever seen before, located in the heart of South Africa’s Garden route, surrounded by the park’s stunning natural beauty.
Gondwana’s 26,000 acre acclaimed private game reserve
Before our Safari road trip in the 4x4s, we freshen up with some teas, coffees and soft drinks, accompanied by an array of tempting cakes. On the 4x4s, we wait in excited anticipation as we prepare ourselves for what we might see wondering through the wilderness. Gondwana’s 26,000 acre acclaimed private game reserve is home to all of Africa’s most exotic creatures – the Big 5 Safari animals (lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino and leopard). Other wildlife including giraffes, hippos, cheetahs and zebras can also be seen roaming around the reserve’s impressive surroundings. So get your cameras ready folks, this really is an experience of a lifetime!
We end the day back at our luxurious Private Lodge
Dining around a relaxed open fire place with a delicious African cuisine. If you’re really looking to unwind, there are some wonderful, rejuvenating Africology spa treatments to try.
If you decide to go for an evening swim in the Lodge’s heavenly infinity pool, keep an eye and ear out for the herds of wildlife that may be enjoying a night time wonder.
