Descent from Tiffendel

Touring 2018 Leaving Tiffendell by motorcycle to Hineville

Day 10 of 16 Cape Town to Victoria Falls

Immersed within the Southern Drakensberg mountains

After a hearty breakfast, immersed within the Southern Drakensberg mountains, it’s time for our steep descent back to the slightly warmer air of Rhodes, where we have a necessary coffee break at a quaint 100 year old Inn.

Weaving in and out of pleasant countryside and rural farmlands, today is full of cultural activities including a visit to a local school and a famous trout fishing area ending up at our quaint country cottage in Himeville.

Early morning coffee stop in Rhodes

The most spectacular scenery in South Africa

After our quick caffeine fix we are all set for our windy route through the spectacular scenery of Tenahead Mountain Reserve, where we get a clearer view of the remarkable Drakensberg Mountains on our left. This great escarpment is considered the most spectacular scenery in South Africa with its superb array of jagged peaks, steep rock, vast forest, waterfalls and tumbling rivers. Some of this majestic landscape is estimated to be 40,000 years old!

Through mountain passes and rural farmlands to a trout fishing area

Our next 95km of riding is designed especially for adventure bikes, leading us through mountain passes and rural farmlands to a trout fishing area. Trout fishing is known as a gentleman’s sport and very popular with the men of South Africa. If possible we make a short stop at a local school, where we give our regular donation of school stationary, sweets etc. which is always met with smiles and laughter. This is such wonderful opportunity to connect with the children and maybe even learn a bit of Afrikaans!

Our steep, windy descent back from our “ski” resort to the village of Rhodes.

Our next refueling point at the old farming town of Matatiele

It’s a 65km ride on asphalt to our next refueling point at the old farming town of Matatiele, where we regroup for lunch. For those missing the guilty pleasures of fast greasy food, there’s a KFC at the station so go and knock yourself out! Full and fat, the remainder of the day we travel mainly on asphalt apart from a 40km stretch of very pleasant gravel track that winds through the beautiful countryside.

There’s nothing quite like lounging around in your robe at the bar with a good pre dinner-pint!

Through the wilderness, nestled at the foot of the Southern Drakensberg, we reach our delightful country lodge which sits within large open gardens with it’s own lake. The bedrooms are housed within cosy cottages and if it’s anything like last year prepare for a dressing gown party! There’s nothing quite like lounging around in your robe at the bar with a good pre dinner-pint! Tonight’s meal is excellent and made even better when shared around our cheery table of crazy bath-robed bikers!

“A fantastic trip. Each day, without exception, provided exciting and challenging riding, spectacular scenery and a huge sense of achievement. The accommodation was excellent with some truly exceeding all expectations. Le Mirage in Namibia was a favourite of mine, never have I needed a cold beer more after a great day's riding - a proper "Ice Cold in Alex" moment! Thanks to all the team for all their help and advice, and to Su, Johnny Maroc for their organisation skills and good humour. Most of all I have made some great friendships with like minded people and I am sure we will ride together again - soon!” ’’  – Dominic
